SCN NSA 2009

The Incredible NSA Report 2009
by Dr. David Martin Reznik

This year’s NSA meeting was everything we’ve come to expect from one of the best planned, best run, best delivered conventions anywhere in the world. I might even go so far as to say it was the most incredible NSA meeting since my first one in 1989 at Washington, DC. Well, maybe not quite as terrific as my first because everyone’s first NSA seems to be the most incredible and memorable in their history book.

For many SCNers, the most incredible part of NSA 2009 was the General Session they called the "Real Rally" where for the first time ever NSA featured nine speakers who where challenged by the MC to deliver their message in 15 minutes, electronic timer and all. It was indeed incredible but you’d have to be asleep in your seat to not know it was NSA’s rendition of our own SCN Spotlight On Speaking. And certainly we have much to learn from NSA but I’d have to toot our own horn when I say they could also learn much from us.

Check out the SCN website for an incredible NSA photo gallery compiled by Mike Canham and me. As always, we greatly appreciate Mike sharing his wonderful photographic talent with us. (And you won’t believe Leslie Canham. Janice has done it again. Worth your visit to the gallery.) In the gallery you will find photos of all of us attending the NSA convention as well as some pretty incredible photos of an incredible party at the home of Laci and Steve Phillips to honor and celebrate the birthday of our own incredible Lois Banta. It’s not very likely, but if Laci ever wants to leave the dental profession she sure has a talent for throwing an incredible smash-hit party and whipping up some incredible southwest cooking. Thanks again Laci and Steve for sharing your lovely home. And thanks Linda Miles for encouraging us to have the party even though you could not be there. We missed you but certain that you enjoyed your trip to Europe with your grand daughters. And Lois Banta, you can get another year older anytime as long as there’s plenty of chocolate on hand. And there was chocolate – lots of chocolate and lots of fun. Pretty incredible I’d say. Oh, I guess I did.

And the secret is out, but it should come as no surprise, that the #1 hit of this years NSA was Janice Hurley-Trailor and her incredible "5-minute makeovers". Her Exhibitor booth was swamped all day, every day and she was certainly the buzz of NSA this year. So it comes as no surprise that Janice has been invited to speak at an NSA Regional Workshop next year – way to go Janice! Talk about a successful makeover, this is what we call an incredible crossover! (There’s that “incredible” word again.)

For those who were at NSA this year – and there were many SCNers – you will recognize these short one-liners and quotes. For those who could not make it, you will at least get a glimpse of the incredible General Session messages that rang oh-so-true.

  • Speaking is at its best when it’s a "personal disclosure" and we give away a piece of ourselves.
  • Relationships are built through regular contact so use every possible means to achieve that.
  • There are four possible reasons people attend a speech or seminar: 1. to escape; 2. to be informed; 3. to be transformed; 4. for a purpose. We should strive to achieve both transformation and purpose.
  • Consumers will spend more for a better experience. (A dental office experience?)
  • As a speaker we should go from inform to transform; from nice to necessary; from event to experience.
  • Delivering a speech from the "jug to the mug" is a monologue. To facilitate the answers from the crowd is a much preferred dialogue.
  • "Life is not about success, not about failure, it’s about passion.
  • Are we "fighting to make a difference or fighting to make it to the weekend?
  • In spiritual medicine, to "self-medicate" means to keep ourselves healthy and the medication has no side-effects.
  • Listen to music to lift spirits; sleep for immunity; enjoy children for their uplifted spirit; treasure what’s right; spend time embracing love and those we love; walk to prevent depression.
  • Uncertainty is another way of being lost.
  • Growth is not adding on, it’s letting go.
  • Give a double dose of ROI: "Return On Influence" and "Return On Impact"
  • Our on-line presence must be in-line with our off-line presence.
  • Before a speech say: "I am here to serve not to perform."
  • Stop looking for another self-help book and start helping others – that’s the real essence of self-help and growth.
  • The younger generations are "chopping down our language like a rainforest."
  • "Don’t miss the incredible opportunity in this magnificent crisis."
  • Someone is ALWAYS making money.
  • Profit is the reward for RISK.
  • What we can do for our clients: Reduce costs, Increase efficiency, and Improve convenience.
  • There’s never been a better time for Networking. (Hey, hey! SCN MOMs meeting May 17 – 18, 2010)
  • A perspective: "If you spent a million dollars per day, everyday, you could not spend a trillion dollars since Jesus was born."
  • The worst recession is always the one we are in because we don’t know the outcome.
  • Economics is driven 20% by reality and 80% by perception.
  • The best service we give to our clients is the same service we should give to our own business.
  • A down economy is like a forest fire – it can serve a good purpose by allowing for new growth.
  • Change usually begins with a crisis.
  • "When I was looking for a job, I wasn’t really looking for work."
  • "Here’s your chance to get in on the ground floor of panic."
  • It was time to leave that job when I started putting the “cuss” in customer service.
  • The strongest weapon in a bad economy is a sense of humor.
  • The opposite of success is not failure; it’s sitting on the couch doing nothing.
  • A Stanford study showed that 99.3% of people are just people. The other 0.7% are lawyers.
  • You know you have potential and ability inside. What are you waiting for?
  • "If you look back hard enough you’ll get a bloody pain in the neck."
  • Woman with restraint: "When I decided to bite my tongue instead of his."
  • Try these three things: 1. Make it big; 2. Do it right; 3. Give it class.
  • Next years NSA theme: "Imagine"
  • As in: "Imagine all that would happen if you acted on all that you learned."

And the best one-liner comes from the king of them all, Dale Irvin, when he was deliberating on the fact that anyone can look at the history of all the websites we visit: "If anyone is looking at the websites I’ve been on, I want you to know that hotchix.com sells incubators."

It just does not get anymore incredible than that.

Smiles and hugs,
David
